Sonic Impact Super T Amp
by Josh Ray, Dec 15 '05
Yes, we do cover inexpensive equipment here. The Super T Amp from Sonic Impact is the followup to their legendary $39 T Amp. If you don't know what all the gossip is about, check out our roundup of T Amp madness. Seems the Super T Amp is a response to the huge modding underground that sprung up around the original T Amp.
The Super T Amp takes the same guts as its little sibling and slaps on audiophile approved parts. $139 gets you quality binding posts, RCA jacks and the ability to draw power from either the wall or your car...for those high-efficiency tail gate parties, I guess.
Power output is the same as the T amp - 6 watts/8 ohms. If I remember correctly, the guys over at 6Moons have one of these up for review. Hopefully we'll see a shootout between the original, the hot-rod version and some of the mod options out there.

I already bought 6 t-amps and used 3 of those to set up nice little sounds systems using Athena speakers and Radio Shack power supplies. I used to brag to everyone that they were listening to a $20 amplifier. I don't think that this amplifier will be nearly as successful as the original unless it is sold for about $70.
I think that what the world really needs is audiophile grade parts, enclosure and controls (and a remote control) using more powerful versions of the Tripath chip, mass-produced in China and costing $200.

I know Teac makes the higher power tripath amp that Red Wine modifies. I'm sure there are more powerful amps out there but it's surprising we haven't seen a massive influx of these giant killers into the high end.

Good find! I'll do a followup post in a few days with this new info. Anyone modding the Super T yet? If the guts are so different, I bet we'll be seeing all sorts of new mods in the near future.
I'm a little surprised Sonic Impact didn't just spend the extra, what, $20 and go with the more powerful Tripath chip. Heck, Tripath even goes up to 120 watts or so - where are the under $500 giant killers???
