See that driver? That 5" sucker has excursion worthy of a subwoofer but without the ghetto-fab distortion levels. And that tweeter? Custom folded ribbon. And that snow cone maker? An omni almost-super tweeter. And that cabinet? Genuine artificial marble.

The company is Mark & Daniel and they're hip to doing things differently. They custom make all their drivers and cabinets because they're cool like that. If you're down with the tech talk, the 6Moons review of the $2980 Maximus monitor goes into depth about all the tech advances in this one little package. The big marketing claim? "The World’s first 800Hz low crossover 2-way miniature speaker with low FMD index design." And that's just the beginning. Their claims of revolution would make most marketing departments blush:

"Taking these limitations, a “Conceptional Revolution” has been achieved by M&D® that re-defines speaker systems based on true Hi-Fi fundamentals. The results are profound innovations for the driving modules, with their unique Dreams wideband high resolution driver for tweeters and their patented SX technology for woofers. M&D® have engineered the specifications the sound for tomorrows speakers !!"

Gotta love it. MD also makes a couple of floorstanding models as well as stand alone Xmas drivers to replace your current speaker's low excursion drivers. Definitely interesting stuff, but no absolute verdict or aqua awards from 6Moons. Hopefully we'll see some more coverage of these guys to know if they can really walk the walk. Read 6Moons for more and check out the Mark & Daniel site.

I am not yet convinced of the utility of a super-tweeter. What is your opininon about them Josh? Anyway, with one of those you can at least check opinions with your audiophile dog. - Say Rex, how this equipment compares in the 80Hz region?
That would be 80 KHz... Another use for super-tweeters and marketing claims: get an seal of approval by the American Kennel Club.
Tweeters, super and garden variety alike, are overrated, IMO. The one bit of the much-debated WIlson Watt/Puppy tweeter ad that's making the rounds that strikes me as accurate is this obsession with wide-bandwidth tweeters. Diamond, Beryllium, etc. (Then again, Wilson's big change in the #8 revision is the tweeter, so...) While tweets make a difference, it's the mids that are the most screwed up. Bass isn't hard and flat tweeters are ubiquitous, but those mids are still a mess. Most systems still can't do voices. At least, that's the way I hear it. As for the MD super-tweet, it's more of an ambience tweeter, which makes sense. Tweeters beam considerably so having omni dispersion above 7k is logical. MD's regular tweet is interesting since it does dig to 800Hz. Would like to hear that... As for other supers with extension upwards of 100kHz, I've neither owned one nor walked into a room and thought "god, what excellent treble!" If you're a tweaker with money to burn, try one out. But for everyone else with systems under, say, $20k, don't bother.
