JAS Audio Gets Around: Orior and Orsa Speaker Reviews

Ooh, drama! Here are two different reviews of JAS Audio speakers with wildly different conclusions, somewhat of a rarity in high-end. The funny thing is, the review of the $2299 Orsa (pictured) gets a rave review while the $3750 Orior (shown on next page) gets this suggestion from Steve Marsh of 6Moons:

I would suggest that the manufacturer revoice the speakers somewhat before distribution gets fully under way here in the United States.

Ouch. A tale of mismatched components? Who knows. Interestingly, both speakers share a double ribbon tweeter contained in a circular brass waveguide for super tweeter extension up to 60kHz. The less expensive Orsa uses the famed Morel 6.5" paper cone woofer while the Orior uses a ceramic driver that looks like an Accuton/Thiel number. Bass for the Orsa hits 45Hz while the Orior claims a wildly low 29Hz. So what did SoundStage's Ken Choi think of the Orsa?

If sonic performance were the sole criteria for judgment, this mini-shootout would have the [$10k] Guarneri Homages winning by a nose for a somewhat more communicative, refined presentation. At less than one-quarter of the price of the Sonus Faber speakers, however, the JAS Audio Orsas came alarmingly close.

We covered US distributor Gini System's room at the VTV EXPO here where they rocked another "O"-named speaker the $3750 Orsus run off a JAS preamp/amp combo.
