Apple continues their attack on all things hi-fi, though this product isn't exactly Apple-authorized. Red Wine Audio is known for all kinds of mods, from CD players to a whole line of micro-powered tripath amps. Here, Red Wine has cracked open a 4th Gen iPod and given it the audiophile one/two. American Wired reports:

I think if you are looking for a state-of-the-art CD player that will dig out every last bit of music out of those pits, the iMod is not going to work for you.

For the rest of you who are interested in having 40+ of your favorite recordings on a compact music server which will blow your mind for its asking price, and if you are willing to accept its obvious limitations, the iMod is a fun device to use at home, in the office, at the cottage, and a wonderful piece of “Hi-Fi” that we can recommend without hesitation.

Read the review for Ian White's full shakedown and check out the Red Wine site for all the detailed Frankensteining that goes into the iMod. Price is $199 and can ONLY be performed on 4th Gen iPods. I talked to Vinnie Rossi of Red Wine about it and who said the iPod Video and Nano are just too damn small to do anything inside. There you go.
