HD-DVD Players Delayed

It shouldn't be much of a surprise, but the ship date of Toshiba's HD-DVD players has delayed from Christmas to some time in 2006. While delayed products are never good, my hope is there will be some act of God to bring HD-DVD and Blu-Ray together. DVD-A and SACD blew each other out of the water. While I don't think the DVD successor will have the same fate, it could be far too long down the road until mass adoption happens.

Then again, Laser Disc was a smashing success, now wasn't it?

UPDATE: Guess what? Samsung straddles the picket line and plans to release a Blu-Ray/HD-DVD combo player. Personally, I think this only makes a bad situation worse. Someone needs to step up and put a stop to the madness before consumers are totally frightened. The only people out there with enough power are the Hollywood studios and the retail giants Amazon and Walmart which, I believe, control the majority of DVD purchases in America. Hollywood has already split itself down the middle on this issue but the retailers should force some kind of resolution in hopes of people repurchasing their entire DVD libraries. If they don't know what to buy, it'll never happen.

This is also bad news for our beloved high-end companies who have limited research budgets. It just means longer until we'll be seeing true videophile quality players in the market.
