Chapter Audio Preface and Couplet

by Josh Ray, Jul 21 '05

Now that is one fly pre-amp. Little is known about these sexy beasts from British company Chapter, but expect to see more of these guys if their gear sounds anything like it looks. The Preface (shown) and Couplet (amp) were introduced at CES this year while a CD player with similar stunning looks is in the pipe for Q4. The Couplet amp puts out 215 watts into 8 ohms. I remember hearing these guys were using highly modified ICEPower amps but their site states power comes from a slew of proprietary technologies (class-D technologies, that is...) If someone has prices on these beauties, let us know.

Check out the next page for a picture of the amp.

UPDATE: Reader Bai informs us the Preface pre-amp goes for $9500 and is one excellent piece of work. Check out the comments section for more details and sonic characteristics from Bai.

I have the Chapter Audio Preface Plus preamp (as shown in the picture) and I paid $9500 for them. I absolutely love this preamp. Not only that it sounded astounding, the user interface in the control pod is my favorite feature of this preamp beside from the way it sounds. When you spin the volume control fast it increase at large increment and if you slow down, you can change the volume in very small increment. You can change the name of each individual input. You can also bypass the volume for each input for possible home theater connection. To me, the pod design is so smart and it is the best preamp that I have experienced. This preamp sounds liquid smooth and the extension of frequency at both end is endless. It sound character is not like SS or tube. It sounds like what music should be.

Dai - sounds like a pretty sweet pre-amp. Can you shed some light on that magnifying glass piece on the top?

The magnifying glass is a peek into the circuit board inside. It is just for aesthetic reason only and I love the look of it.
