Bose Companion 5
by Danny Kaey, Oct 18 '06
Stop the press! Newsflash! … I’ve been Bose’d! Yep, I’m coming out of the closet – the recently released $399 Bose Companion 5 multimedia speaker system is really, really neat. So just like you, Joe and Schmoe, I couldn’t help but notice all the new ads for this little desktop computer speaker system – though of course I was thinking it’s the typical Bose marketing coy. Armed with a genuine intention to get to the bottom of this, I went to a local Bose retail demo store and figured I’d give this little thing a fair shot.
Low and behold, I have to say this system ROCKS! I stood there in complete disbelief when genuine surround sound was coming at me from 2 (!) speakers. Bose used several movie scenes to demonstrate this effect -- most notably Tim Allen’s Santa Clause 2 -- in the scene you see him move from the center of the screen behind you! While not quite at the level of a dedicated 5.1 surround system, no doubt, most of the content was cherry picked as it probably worked best within the limitations, it never the less offered a fine experience. I for one am not all too happy about having 5 separate speakers, wires and stands towering next to me at my computer desk… I requested a review sample, hopefully Bose will accept.
Dan, April Fools is still like some months away... :D
Jokes aside, I'd say it's only fair to give Bose a shot or two, if only to reveal to which level is its signal-to-marketing-noise ratio actually in. Don't think it will bring a big turn of events though.
WWJD? (What would Josh do?) :D

WWJD? Lol, I'll give Bose a fair shot, ya know, because gimmicks are cool. A turntable you wear around your neck is awesome so why not $300 surround sound?
And since I'm a gamblin' man, anyone want to bet that the "surround sound" processing in this Bose system is the same stuff as in the Creative XMod?

Maybe they finally hired real engineers. It's conceivable...

Is this a litte cheeky payback for the barbs thrown your way after bashing Creative sight unseen, Danny?
(I see conspiratorial humor in everything.)

Bravo,
Props to our generation keeping the open mind!!!
Screw you old fogie audiofools.
BOSE at some point needed to react to all their bad press with a semi decent product, maybe this is it.
I look forward to the review and all the hate comments if it is a positive review.
Ain't the internet great!!!

What's that little round thingie. Is it for headphones?

Is Fred F on crack? Why does Bose have to listen to us? We're ants! If you ask a random slice of Humans what the best speaker is, Bose is the first brand 90 percent of those human's lips. Any good-sounding product from them is accidental, they dominate the market and maintain ruthless Business practices (sueing journals who dare to write bad reviews, spying on dealers to make sure Bose is the first brand recommended, etc). Just like the first Sony Playstation sounds good as a CD player, if these speakers sound good: great! but it's not intentional. Good sound has never been part of the equation, why should it be now?

@ all...
boyzzz! hehe, figured I'd get commentary, but lets keep it civil please!
FYI the model 5 here is the only Bose system I have heard in what seems to be eternity, neve bothered with the rest. My intention here was to see if this is a viable alternative to having 5 towering Creative & others speakers at my computer desk - which I think is totally silly - and low and behold it appears that Bose hit the nail with this model. For me, it does everything I could ask it for without the unnecessary clutter.
Is it "musica" "resolving" "audiophile"? Who cares? It plays music, film and little stuff pretty good and that's all I am asking & looking for.
Hopefully Bose will send me a review sample...

@ Danny -
You say - "Is it "musical" "resolving" "audiophile"? Who cares? It plays music, film and little stuff pretty good ..."
Well, I would say that I care, and that that's basically what our whole industry/hobby cares about; getting good sound for our music. I'm not old at all, nor a believer in thousand dollar cables and that kind of junk, but comments like that are a slippery slope. What's "good enough"? 128k mp3s? a tape walkman? midi files? Certainly it's different for everyone...but we are (in theory) the ones who do care about high quality sound. Moving further away from that just dilutes what we support and enjoy.

Bose has always had some of the very, very best and smartest engineers in the business.
I can't comment on all Bose's systems.
Though I did hear the Companion 3 series II - which impressed me.

I bought the original Companion 3 after my Klipsch 5.1 Promedia died for the third time (do not buy Klipsch, they have well documented amp failure problems).
The Companion 3's were never quite as loud as the Klipsch, but then again, they never failed on me, and actually do very well for such a small system. I've been waiting for a better Bose computer speaker system, and I'm definitely gonna try out the Companion 5.
Of course, I'm not one of those Bose haters who think anything less than a $10k system is crap.

I think i know what happened. Bose got wind of that article you posted pointing out all of Bose’s bullshit and how they sue everyone when a bad review is relieved. They read it and threatened legal action unless you post a good review on sonicflare. i think that more likely than Bose having a system that sounds as good as it costs.
