It wouldn't be 6Moons without reviews of esoteric speakers from the depths of the audio underground. These two speakers do that high-efficiency thing -- you know, requiring only a few watts for insane volume levels. Is it just me or are we seeing a massive trend towards high-efficiency? When I asked a friend of mine how efficient his speakers were, he said "they're 85dB, but they act a lot more efficient!" Small efficiency complex? Blame it on 6Moons.
Anyway, no, the speaker shown isn't missing a cabinet. It's the Bastanis Promethius speaker system, rocking an "open baffle" design. These nude speakers send sound both forward and backward in an attempt to create a massive acoustic presentation. The powered subwoofer flushes out the depths since open baffles are forced to move all the air in your living room, not just in a wooden box. Steve Marsh likes these guys something fierce, dishing out an award. Speaker systems begin at $3750.
Below, the RL Acoustique Lamhorns are some crazy beasts. Single driver speakers are a cult within a cult and the Lamhorn doesn't go with Fostex or other standard banana pulp-based drivers, but wild German drivers costing over $1000 each. Rumors is a hemp driver is in the works. Frequency range is an honest-to-god 20Hz - 20kHz. Speaker pair comes in at $8500. Reviewer Mike says this:
If you find yourself headed down the single-driver path, you can think of the Lamhorns as one very strong candidate for that last pair of speakers. Come to think of it, if you always thought single-driver speakers weren't for you because they compromise too much at the frequency extremes, the Lamhorns may change your mind if you can give them an ear attached to an open mind.
Check 'em out.
